Artist Artwork Statement
The name Fatima comes from the daughter of the Islamic prophet. The five fingers represents the 5 pillars of Islam but is mainly a symbol used for protection and used as defence to ward of the Evil eye . It is often depicted as a symmetrical hand, with fingers pressed close together, either facing upwards or downwards.
An upside-down Hamsa is seen as a blessing for fertility as well as a means of receiving answered prayers. A Hamsa facing downwards symbolizes abundance and prosperity, inviting good things to come into your life.
Here I have tried capturing all the key elements of Hamsa Hand and the Evil Eye using brush strokes with some gestural expressionism.
